The mental health crisis is disproportionately affecting lower-income individuals, with care costs estimated to be $14 Trillion by 2040
A new report from the Meharry School of Global Health and the Deloitte Health Equity Institute reveals that individuals with mental health conditions are more likely to suffer from chronic physical illnesses, underscoring the deep connection between mental and physical health. [1] The report warns that if mental health disparities across the United States are not addressed, they could result in $14 trillion in costs by 2040. [2]
The report highlights that lower-income individuals are particularly burdened by chronic conditions, worsening their economic difficulties. Racial and ethnic disparities also persist in health care, leading to unnecessary spending and productivity losses, especially among marginalized groups who face higher rates of unemployment due to mental health challenges.
The study examined the overlap between mental and physical health conditions, such as diabetes, stroke, hypertension, ischemia, and HIV. It found that people of all ages with mental health conditions are more likely to have chronic physical conditions and vice versa. Additionally, lower-income individuals with mental health issues are more prone to chronic conditions compared to their higher-income counterparts. [3]
Approximately 90% of Americans believe the country is facing a mental health crisis, a sentiment supported by data showing a 15% increase in antidepressant prescriptions for adults and a 38% increase for adolescents between 2015 and 2019. Trends in mental illness and substance use disorders, which were worsening before the pandemic, have only intensified since 2020, according to the study. [2]
To lessen the worsening effects of poor mental health on the nation, it is crucial to address the underlying factors contributing to these challenges, including the broader political and social determinants that influence access to care and opportunities for a healthy lifestyle.
The World Health Organization suggests that integrated care approaches could be a strategy to tackle mental health inequities, reducing cultural stigma, improving access to mental health services, lowering health care costs, and enhancing economic stability by ensuring fair participation in the workforce.
